A Must-Try Vietnamese Coffee Drink: Bạc Sỉu

Krystal Do

What is the coffee culture like in Vietnam?

Vietnamese drinks coffee during any time of the day at either casual-style coffee shops or on little plastic stools on the street. Coffee is much more than a quick energy boost, it is an excuse for Vietnamese people to sit, relax, chat, or simply to enjoy their peaceful time. The coffee culture of the Vietnamese people can be encapsulated into three words: deep, gentle, and slow. To my interpretive cultural knowledge, Vietnamese people are very particular about their coffee preferences. From a local perspective, great coffee should be strong, concentrated, has high acidity level and tinges of alcohol taste in it. Most importantly, coffee must be made the traditional way using “phin ca phe” to retain all exotic flavors from the Robusta coffee beans. Condensed milk also places an important role in the coffee culture in Vietnam since condensed milk is commonly used to add flavors and sweetness to the traditional coffee. Time after time, the young generation is more and more into the habit of drinking coffee while getting their work done in coffee shops. Rather than being a casual place for people to sit, relax, and chat, nowadays, coffee shops are designed to adapt to new consumers’ trends with more sophisticated designs, spacious seating, greater lightings, so forth and so forth. Some even offer live music. However, enjoying coffee on little plastic stools on the street is still a dominant style that doesn’t seem to go away anytime soon.

Why people love Bạc Xỉu?

You have probably already heard about the infamous Vietnamese Iced Coffee (Cà Phê Sữa Đá), which is an equal combination of roasted Robusta beans mixed with condensed milk and a generous amount of ice. Vietnamese Iced Coffee drinks are the most prevalent in Vietnam, and are enjoyed by so many generations, from the young to the old. However, Bạc Xỉu recently becomes one of the most loved coffee drinks among the younger coffee lovers who prefer sweeter and more flavorful-styled coffees.

What is Bạc Xỉu?

Bạc Xỉu is a variation on the traditional Cà Phê Sữa Đá, but requires more ingredients. However, the way you make them is pretty much the same. Cà Phê Sữa Đá is made of just coffee, condensed milk and ice, while Bạc Xỉu is a combination of coffee, condensed milk, coconut milk, and lots of ice. The most fascinating thing is that even though the way both drinks are made is the same, they taste so different and unique. Bạc Xỉu is much sweeter and milker, therefore, it is most popular among women and even kids who don’t like the bitter flavor of coffee yet can’t resist the taste and flavor of coffee. But guys love Bạc Xỉu too. Just because this coffee drink is sweeter doesn’t mean that the coffee taste is any less powerful and addictive. If you want to know what Bạc Xỉu really tastes like and why so many have become addicted to this coffee drink, hop along and I will show you how to make it!
